2. Gan Jiang (Ginger root) can be used as a dry root or fresh root. The specific indication or direction of activity is affected depending on how it is prepared. Which form of Ginger is stronger in action and most effective as a carminative, stimulating HCl production and helping to relieve nausea, gas, motion sickness or intestinal cramping? I answered that the fresh root was used and this was marked wrong on the quiz. In our materia medica it specifically states that the fresh root is used for nausea and motion sickness.

Hi Amie Hope you are well. You are correct as we all know ginger is used in both forms has a carminative action. This was really to remind us that the difference is the use of dry ginger is stronger and more effective in stimlating HCL production etc. The fresh does have carminative action but its use is more focused on other actions to calm the stomach . The question also asked which is stronger inaction from your MM sheet The dry root (Gan Jiang) and the fresh root (Sheng Jiang) of Ginger are similar but the dry root is stronger in action. Dried Ginger is a carminative, it stimulates gastric HCL production (but decreases pepsin secretion), and relievesnausea, vomiting, gas, motion sickness and intestinal cramps. It is appropriate for people with deficient gastric HCL andpoor digestion or deficient stomach/spleen qi with a pale tongue. The fresh root is milder acting than the dry root, but is also effective as a carminative and antiemetic. It is useful for nausea, motion/travel sickness, morning sickness , vertigo, chemotherapy-induced nausea, vomiting, indigestion, food poisoning, menstrual cramps with nausea, colds or influenza best wishes Kerry
