Hi David, I am confused about the question I brought up in class. You mentioned that herbs can be contaminated with bacteria, and I asked if an overnight cold infusion of marshmallow root was safe. You suggested using boiling water and letting it infuse overnight. Then another student said that she understood that marshmallow root should always be a cold infusion and you agreed with her. Will an infusion with boiling water still be efficacious? i am going to be using it for awhile, and I don't want to end up with some kind of bacterial infection, but I want it to be effective. Sorry for the confusion, boiling an herb first will prevent bacterial contamination in an overnight infusion, but as was mentioned Marshmallow is not usually boiled, it sits at room temperature for 4-6 (or more) hours. So it depends on your Marshmallow root, if it is contaminated with pathogenic bacteria it could be a problem. Especially in people who are immunocompromised. Still many people do this on a regular basis and do not have any problems, so I think it is a rather uncommon issue. I hope that helps, there is not definite answer.

What I'm using comes from Frontier Herbs. I think they are reputable, I just don't know if they test for bacteria.
