What is the best way to prepare Icelandic moss? Decoction or does a cold water infusion work? I'm looking for a salty demulcent to help soften hard, sticky phlegm but I've never worked with this herb before. Would it work as part of a tea powder blend that will infuse for 30 mins? Thanks very much for any guidance you can offer .

I did some experimentation and discovered that, no, a cold water infusion does not work. I decocted for 20 mins and infused for 60 mins. It turned out wonderfully. Do you think that Irish moss was a better option for what I was looking to do? Thanks for your time.

I'm curious about this too! Is Irish moss and Icelandic moss the same thing? Many people do a cold infusion of irish moss and then blend to make a gel. David's MM sheet says to decoct it and then make a gel. I keep the gel in the fridge and add a dollop to soups or congee before eating to get the benefits. I wonder how long it will last in the fridge though. thanks

I have never worked with Icelandic moss, but it is Lichen, so the Lichen acids are mostly alcohol soluble, while the polysaccharides are water soluble. Most directions suggest a hot infusion.

I think many things would work for dry sticky phlegm, but what color it is (yellow, green, bloody - hot) or clear or white (cold) , that would affect my choice in herbs.

No, totally different plants, Irish moss is a seaweed and Icelandic Moss is a Lichen. I doubt it will keep more than a 3-4 days without starting to degrade.
