I asked about harvesting echinacea root in the last class, and you said that purpurea root has low activity. Is it worth it then to harvest the root at all, and just use flowers and cones? Do leaves have any activity? I only have a few plants because I have a very small garden. Becky Russell

The leaves have virtually no activity and yes the root has some activity. As I stated in class in my opinion E. purpurea root has about 50% (or perhaps a bit less) of the activity of E. angustifolia root. So I make a tincture of the fresh root and another of the green cones (the flower petals have no activity). These are mixed together 50/50 which gives you a tincture that has approximately 70% of the activity of E. angustifolia root tincture
