Hi David, My mother in law has chronic heartburn for which she takes Tums. By chance, she discovered that decaffeinated black tea soothes her heartburn. Can you help me understand this? Could it be the bitterness of the black tea that is promoting better digestion by stimulating the gallbladder? Is it the tannins? Perhaps the acidity? Looking to help her assess if this is a hypo or hyper clorhidric problem. Thank you! Robyn O'Neill

Coffee is both bitter and acidic, but not acidic enough to correct achlorhydria, so I would think that it is the bitterness, that stimulates gastric HCl, bile and other digestive enzymes. I am not sure how old your mother-in-law is, but if she is in her 50s or 60s (or older) she is much more likely to have achlorhydria .
