Hello, I was reading more about Shan Yao and I'm confused because it seems to be contradictory in what it does (or does it do different things depending on the internal situation?) The MM sheet says it tonifies the qi and is for stomach/spleen deficiency and it also says that in a study it decreased gastric HCL production. Can you please provide some clarity on when it is appropriate to use? Thank you!

No it does different things depending on what herbs you combine with. It is accurate that the extract reduced gastric HCl in an animal study. That was the herb as a single remedy, it is always combined with other herbs and this helps direct it’s action. The MM sheet pretty clearly describes when to use Shan Yao - Deficient stomach/spleen qi with fatigue, hyperchlorhydria, gastric ulcers, leaky gut, IBS, impaired gastric emptying, etc.
