I found a goldenseal root at a local nursery and wanted to give it a chance to grow. I have the shade, lots of birch and tulip trees, so I figured it would have a fighting change. My one worry is the deer. I have lots that come and just eat everything I plant. I tried planting American Ginseng roots a few years back and the deer just destroyed them when they got their leaves. Will they do the same for the goldenseal? Also I am hoping to buy more American Ginseng (seeds this time not roots) and was wondering if it would be any issues if I plant some seeds around the goldenseal root I just planted? I have limited ground that is viable for growing. A good amount of my land is lose rocky eroding bank that rally only the birch and tulip trees grow in. I have tried to plant mulberries in the sunny bank side, but they freeze out in the winter. it doesn't help that I am fighting with the oriental bittersweet vine. At the bottom of the shading bank, near a creek, I do have some well-established spice bush plants. but they are losing some of their shade because the bittersweet is killing the sumac's and between me pulling the bittersweet out and what it has killed the erosion has gotten so bad.

David said: Will they do the same for the goldenseal? Yes, you will need to cage it. Goldenseal and Ginseng do not usually grow together. Goldenseal likes Tulip Poplars if they are established.
