Valerian clarification

Hello David, On the Valerian MM sheet, it says: “The older the dried root, the stronger the odor and the less effective it is medicinally.” Is this correct that the root smell gets stronger and not weaker as it gets older? If so, how crazy! Thanks. Donna Sheinbach
