Safflowers for medicine making

The safflowers I grew this summer and last are yellow. In your materia medica sheet you wrote that good quality flowers are red. I checked to make sure that the seeds I planted are Carthamus tinctorius. I got them from Richter's in Canada, and their catalogue says they are for medicinal use. I was hoping to make a liniment with them. Should I look for another source next season, or are the yellow flowers good for medicine too? They grew and dried beautifully.

The yellow flowers should be ok, but they should be at least tinged with red, they may become redder once dried. Also I have just gotten back from BC and heard of several examples of seeds from Richters not being the correct species, I am not saying that that is the situation in your case, but it has left me less confident in their seed ID.
