In researching my project, I found that J. Ross in Combining Western Herbs and Chinese Medicine refers to Hydrastis as an antihemorrhagic and pairs it with Lobelia for delayed labor. And with viburnum for postnatal pain and bleeding. I also found it listed as an antihemorrhagic and oxytocic herb in Carole Fisher's Materia Medica of Western Herbs. I randomly checked Ellingwood, "It is useful also in post-partum hemorrhage, but is rather slow in its action when immediate results are demanded. " I have never heard of this use. I do not understand the mechanism of action - what in the constituents is doing this? Do you have any experience or have heard about Goldenseal for hemorrhage? It is unlikely I will ever use Goldenseal as it does not sound strong enough for postpartum hemorrhage and I try to avoid using endangered species. I would, however, like to hear your thoughts on this.

Goldenseal has a long history of use for bleeding, especially gastric bleeding. I suspect it is due to the Hydrastine content, which is a superb mucus membrane tonic. Lloyd Brothers at one time made a colorless Hydrastis extract which was a Hydrastine extract, that was indicated for gastric bleeding, menorrhagia, mild post-partum bleeding, intestinal bleeding, etc. And there is plenty of organically grown Hydrastisin the market place so you can use it and not worry about using an endangered species
