David and/or Andrew, I am trying to help a young man (23 years old), who has had multiple concussions (5). These happened when he was 2,3,5 (lost consciousness),7, and the most recent at age 13. With the last one, he lost immediate memory. As in, didn't know where he was, who he was, whether his parent were his parents or not, etc. Immediately following the concussion, he vomited for 8 hours, became emotionally disturbed/panicked, and his speech was inaudible. Clearly severe, clearly very scary. Aside from an MRI and CT scan in the ER, which naturally didn't show anything, there was no helpful intervention. He was sent home and told to stay in a dark, quiet room with no sound for an unspecified amount of time. Fast forward ten years, and he struggles with insomnia (can't get to sleep and wakes unrested. I don't know if he snores or not), focus, mood swings, irritability, anxiety and daily headaches. He describes his pain as throbbing, and the headaches are migratory, meaning they move around. They aren't in the same place each time. He has completely switched up his days and nights, as he games until 3 or 4 in the morning and then will sleep half the day. His diet is atrocious, and his bloodwork is indicating elevated triglycerides (308), high CRP (3.4), high glucose (97), elevated insulin (92.5) elevated TSH (5.5), low vitamin D (14.9), low HDL (21). Increased WBC (10.2). Increased absolute lymphs (3.6) and eosinophils (.7) Elevated ALT (46) I was shocked to see numbers like this in someone his age. Not surprisingly, he is overweight and insanely inactive. I have not been able to look at his tongue. Here are my recommendations thus far: DIET Remove sugar and simple carbohydrates (especially soda, which is all he drinks) Increase protein intake. Increase green leafy vegetables/eat the rainbow. Increase H2O (other bloodwork numbers are indicating dehydration...RBC, Hematocrit) LIFESTYLE Normalize sleeping pattern and establish a bedtime routine. Get out and move! Even just walking! SUPPLEMENTATION Vitamin C Fish oil (EPA/DHA) 3 grams per day Vitamin D3/K2 10000IU per day Methylated B complex Chromium Liposomal Glutathione Magnesium Bisglycinate and possibly Magnesium Threonate (for brain) Melatonin? ADDITIONAL LABS Complete thyroid panel (TSH, FT3, FT4, RT3, TPOAb, and TgAb) Hemoglobin A1C Recheck labs after lifestyle and dietary changes in several months. I would love some input in the following areas: 1. In addition to attempting to normalize his sleep patterns through lifestyle and supplementation, I would like to help him by recommending an herbal tincture for sleep. His brain has zero chance without it. 2. I would like to support his brain health and reduce his headaches. I have jotted down a few herbs I am looking at for his specific energetics and symptomology but have no idea how to put this together! I would appreciate input regarding any aspects of his case. He is the son of a family friend, so at least I have the willingness from him to be a guinea pig, but I really do want to help him feel better! He realizes he needs to make EXTREME changes very quickly and recheck labs to see what has sifted down after major dietary interventions. He has an appointment with a functional holistic MD in the very near future per my recommendation. Here is the list: For sleep: Chamomile, Linden, Passionflower, Hops For brain health: Bacopa, Gotu Kola, Holy Basil, Ginko Biloba Standardized Extract, St John's Wort, Wood Betony, Lions Mane Any thoughts and insights would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately I cannot do case reviews as part of ATP, there are too many unknowns and it takes a great deal of time, which I simply do not have. I will make a few simple comments. The key here is he willing to make changes ? The foundation will be dietary changes, lifestyle changes, better sleep hygiene, exercise and the herbs and supplements can help push him in the right direction. They aren’t in the same place each time. He has completely switched up his days and nights, as he games until 3 or 4 in the morning and then will sleep half the day. His diet is atrocious, (a place to start if he is willing and if not, I doubt you can really help him). Get out and move! Even just walking! Essential SUPPLEMENTATION good, but i doubt the glutathione will be all that useful and one magnesium or the other, not both For sleep: Chamomile, Linden, Passionflower, Hops, Try Hops, Passionflower, Zizyphus seed (Suan Zao Ren) For brain health: Bacopa, Gotu Kola, Holy Basil, Ginko Biloba Standardized Extract, St John’s Wort, Wood Betony, Lions Mane t These are good, but he does not need them all, which fit him best ? I might consider SJW, Gotu Kola, White Peony and Bacopa
