Hello, I have a question regarding supplementing iron and folate. Reviewing the notes from our lecture on supplements, I wonder if these 2 vitamins and minerals are related as they support blood health, whether deficiencies in them go hand in hand? For using folate for restless legs, is it best to work with diet first before adding a supplement? And with iron, why is it contraindicated for post-menopausal women? Thank you! Jennifer

They are not related chemically, although both are essential to our health. Folate deficiencies are often related to B-12 deficiencies but not iron deficiencies. Both folate deficiency and iron deficiency can cause RLS, but usually one or the other, not both. Iron is pro-oxidative and is usually not given to older men and post menopausal women. Once women stop menstruating their need for iron decreases and dietary sources are usually adequate.
