Are there any herbs or herbal formulas specifically useful for gastoparesis? In searching our Materia Medica sheets, I see that orange peel (Chen pi) is useful and that made me curious if a bitters formula might be generally useful. Constipation is of course part of the picture. I have a client with multiple food sensitivities, gastroparesis and I suspect SIBO and leaky gut. Would a formula also containing ginger be a good idea to support motility?

Herbs that act as prokinetics include Angelica, Bai Zhu (very drying), Artichoke leaf, Yarrow, Orange Peel and many non-alkaloidal bitters. Yes a bitters formula can also be quite useful in this situation. Ginger may be useful but it is not a prokinetic.

Thank you for this. I have a client who's 16yo daughter was recently diagnosed with gastroparesis. Would the above recommendation differ for pediatrics? Nausea, vomiting, and chronic constipation are of primary concerns

I don’t consider a 16 yo pediatric, I use adult doses and adult herbs for teens. The bigger issue is compliance and getting the herbs into a young person, who may not be willing to take unpleasant tasting teas or tinctures. If she will take a tea, I would consider something like this 2 p Angelica, 1 p Ginger, 1 p Orange Peel, 1 p Jujube date, 1 p Dandelion root, with 2 oz Prune Juice added to 4 oz of the tea.
