After our discussion on pharmacologic incompatibility, I would like to get a better sense of what the threshold is for 'getting away' with combing herbs of various levels of tannins with mucilaginous herbs like Marshmallow. We discussed Cat's Claw as 'high' tannin, and horse chestnut and others as not being so bad... The Botanical Safety handbook has nice list of herbs with >10% tannin content which i would assume would be 'high' tannin.... but didn't know if you might consider some other lower percent threshold for tannins as 'high' content... And just to make it more complicated if we are talking about herbal formulas with 7-9 herbs... If there is one mucilaginous herb, the overall %tannin contribution to a formula might be a lot lower if only one of the herbs has high tannin and the other 8 don't have any... (relative percent of tannin in the formula would drop to a much lower percent). Perhaps I'm being too mathematical about it, but I would like to figure out more of the clinical nuance on this issue.

I have found even in a triune formula the use of 1 high tannin herb along with a mucilaginous herb can create a pharmaceutical incompatibility. Jus avoid using high tannin herbs with mucilagenous herbs (I do not mean moistening herbs like Ophiopgon or Prince Seng), I mean slime - Marshmallow, Slippery Elm, Irish Moss, Flax seed, Psyllium, etc
