Simon Mills and Kerry Bone mention some "highly speculative concerns" about Calendula being an abortifacient from a handful of texts. (The Essential Guide to Herbal Safety, pg. 309.) Do you have any thoughts about this plant's safety as a tea during pregnancy? I am also interested in learning about plantain leaf as a tea during pregnancy. Lastly, do you feel that is safe for mothers-to-be to be taking alcohol tinctures? Thank you!

I personally do not think Calendula is a problem during pregnancy but I know of no studies that prove it is safe, Plantain leaf should be safe but again no studies and alcohol is questionable. In excess it can cause fetal alcohol syndrome, I usually avoid using tinctures during pregnancy, as most women are uncomfortable taking them. I mostly use teas, capsules, vinegar extracts and glycerites and if I use a tincture it is a small dose of something that only works in that form.
