Hi, David--I'm curious about herbs like Astragalus, Ashwagandha, Prince seng, Hawthorn, Reishi, etc. If someone takes them for a few weeks or a few months, are there permanent or semi-permanent effects? Is daily use necessary? Are some of the effects long-lasting (eg. Hawthorn's strengthening effects on the heart) and others not (eg. Astragalus protecting against respiratory infection)? I'd love to know more about this--right now I'm just guessing. Thanks!

Adaptogens and tonic herbs need to be taken long term to maximize their effects. If you stop taking them the effects gradually wear off. IN TCM this type of herbs is CI during acute infection (mostly), but they are occasionally used in small amounts for deficient people with an infection (Colds, flu, bronchitis, etc).
